The objective of the course was to discuss and identify specific indicators as they relate directly to land and natural resources (e.g. forestry), and the experience with successful use of indicators and the role of information in this process. The program covered also areas such as the interactions between environmental degradation and disaster risk related to tourism and between environmental management and vulnerability. Within this context the key issues discussed included the value of prevention and the importance of achieving synergies and integration across sectors such as disaster risk reduction and environmental management and the available tools to help operationalize the integration.
Case studies were presented by leading academics and government officials. Workshop discussions conveyed different views on policy and technical aspects related to indicators and how to assess environmental performance. Participants also discussed the constraints related to applying compliance indicators. An important premise of the discussion centered on the concept "what cannot be measured cannot be improved" and that having good indicators for measurement should be a priority for policy analysis and evaluation.
Thirty-four participants attended the workshop including the Environment Prosecutor for Mexico City, faculty from El Colegio de Mexico and staff from the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, SEMARNAT), Mexico Ministry of Tourism la Secretaría de Turismo SECTUR and NGOs.
