Climate Change Featured Programs & Events

The World Bank Institute's climate change major programs and events include:

Carbon Finance Assist

The Carbon Finance Assist Program (CF Assist) helps to ensure that developing countries and economies in transition are able to fully participate in the flexible mechanisms defined under the Kyoto Protocol, and benefit from the sustainable development gains associated with such projects. It facilitates regional and global events to develop carbon markets and supports financial sector participation in carbon fiance. CF-Assist also organizes the annual Carbon Expo, as well as regional carbon forums.

Carbon Expo

The Carbon Finance Assist (CF-Assist) program facilitates regional and global events to develop carbon markets and supports financial sector participation in carbon finance.  It organizes the annual Carbon Expo, as well as regional carbon forums. More than 3,000 people and 250 exhibitors took part in Carbon Expo 2009 in Barcelona, Spain, with a theme of “Cities and Climate Change.” The expo included events on how cities can play a more prominent role in climate change mitigation.  This was the 6th yearly offering of the world’s largest knowledge sharing and business development platform for carbon market stakeholders. Carbon Expo 2010 will take place in Cologne, Germany.

Development Marketplace

The Development Marketplace is a competitive grant program administered by the World Bank. The theme of the 2009 global competition is climate change.  The competition will identify 20 to 25 innovative, early-stage projects addressing climate adaptation to receive up to US$200,000 in grant funding for implementation over two years.

This year's sub-themes include:

Youth and Climate Change

WBI's youth and climate change capacity development program aims to empower youth to become actively involved in the global climate change actions and to influence policies and programs in their countries. The program includes “training of trainers” to help youth to take part in peer-to-peer learning and develop and maintain youth networks that will enable them to become leading voices in their communities on issues related to climate change. The program includes youth-friendly and interactive learning material; tools and resources to help with youth capacity development and outreach; skills development; and networking programs for youth organizations. See the course information flyer (pdf, 177KB).

Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management

WBI’s Climate Change practice area includes the Natural Disaster Risk Management program.  The program comprises a series of web-based courses on disaster risk management and climate change that address a broad range of issues and challenges faced by policy makers and practitioners coping with natural disasters.  The courses aim to raise awareness and advance the participants’ analytical skills and professional knowledge in specific areas of disaster risk management. Each course reviews policy options, institutional arrangements and available instruments used to reduce the social, financial and economic impact of natural calamities.

The program’s premiere course is Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management. See the course information flyer (pdf, 149 KB) and  read more about the course (pdf, 106KB), including case studies from Kiribati, Nicaragua, and the Philippines.

Cities and Climate Change

The Cities and Climate Change program recognizes the critical importance of urban areas, and stakeholders in urban areas, in climate change mitigation and adaptation.  This program includes a twinning initiative for climate change knowledge-sharing between cities as well as a Carbon Finance Capacity Building (CFCB) program for emerging megacities. The Carbon Finance for Urban Areas learning program will include the development of e-learning products on topics such as energy, sustainable housing, and transport.
