4:00-4:30pm   Plenary Session 4: Introduction to Working Case Studies and Preparation for Smaller Group Discussions, in full plenary. A facilitator will introduce two business cases: one from a Latin American microinsurer, and the other from AIG, Uganda. The case studies will give participants an opportunity to work in small groups that include various stakeholders, such as regulators, insurers, technical assistance providers, etc. It will also provide an opportunity to apply the concepts from the workshop to real business scenarios. 4:30-5:45pm   Breakout Session on the Case Studies. Participants will break into four smaller groups. Two groups will address the Latin American business case, and two groups will address the AIG-Uganda case. On the following day, the groups will switch cases, so that everyone has an opportunity to participate in both. Participants will be divided into four groups and will move to the following rooms:

  • Group A: Gavea Ballroom
  • Group B: Leblon Room
  • Group C: Ipanema Room
  • Group D: Copacabana Room

 

5:45-6:00pm   Plenary Conclusion to the Day. Gavea Ballroom.

 

6:30-9:30pm   Cocktail and Dinner, Hosted by FENASEG (Insurance Association of Brazil). Dinner will be held in Gavea Ballroom B at the Sheraton Rio Hotel.

9:00-10:30am   Plenary Session 5: Perspectives on the Experience of VELUGU/IKP India, a Community-based Insurance Model. In operation since 2003, the VELUGU/IKP program insures approximately 2 million lives, and it expands continuously. It uses "smart subsidies" to build market infrastructure for the insurers to deliver their products.

  • Perspective from the Delivery Channel and Servicer: What have been the most cost-effective and efficient channels? What are the merits of contracting-out to community-based organizations or using the staff of the insurer? What are the alternatives? M.   • Session 6a (Gavea Ballroom): The Role of Insurers and Reinsurers in Expanding Access to Insurance. Facilitator: Rodolfo Wehrhahn, Managing Director for Latin America, Transamerica Reinsurance. This breakout session will offer a facilitated discussion for participants from insurance and reinsurance companies, and insurance associations, to consider the opportunities and challenges ahead in microinsurance.
  • Session 6b (Leblon Room): The Role of Distribution Channels in Expanding Access to Insurance. Facilitator: Craig Churchill, Social Finance Program, Employment Sector, International Labour Organization, and Chair, CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance. In this breakout group, participants with a background in insurance distribution and claims management will discuss the obstacles to expanding microinsurance, and the road ahead.
  • Session 6c (Ipanema Room): The Role of Regulation, Supervision and Policy in Expanding Access to Insurance. Facilitator: Arup Chatterjee, International Association of Insurance Supervisors. In this breakout session, supervisors and regulators will gather to address some common questions: What can regulators and policymakers do to strengthen the enabling environment for broader insurance coverage for the poor? What lessons have been learned around the world?
  • Session 6d (Copacabana Room): The Role of Donors and Technical Assistance Providers in Expanding Access to Insurance. Facilitator: Nhu-An Tran, Microenterprise Development Advisor, USAID. Donors and representatives from multilateral, bilateral and other development institutions will gather to discuss the roles they can play, and plans for the future in microinsurance.
