Tom W. Merrick, Program Advisor/Health and Population
Tom Merrick, PhD, a demographer and economist by training, has a long and distinguished career in the field of reproductive health and population. Prior to joining the Bank as its Senior Population and Reproductive Health Advisor, Tom was director of the Population Reference Bureau and a Professor at Georgetown University. He has been working with the Adapting to Change Learning Program on Population, Reproductive Health, and Health Sector Reform from its beginning as a series of regional pilot courses in 1998-99 in Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan and Senegal. Since his official retirement from the Bank in May 2001, Tom has devoted his time to the Adapting for Change Program, among other things, as the lead trainer in the global core course. Tom has been working with partners in LAC and Anglophone Africa, and has provided technical advice for the content of the internet-based course. He has country experience in Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Peru, Philippines, Russia, and Vietnam. Tom is the author of several books as well as numerous journal articles, book chapters, and World Bank publications.
