Every week 200,000 children under five die in developing countries. The vast majority of deaths are from preventable causes such as poor nutrition and diarrhea related to poor access to safe drinking water and sanitation.
Every week over 10,000 women die of complications of pregnancy and childbirth.
Every week HIV/AIDS together with malaria and tuberculosis claim over 50,000 lives.
Responding to this daunting task is a major challenge for both implementing agencies and development partners. One of the major factors is limited capacity which stalls progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for health in client countries. The World Bank Institute's Health and AIDS Program helps client countries overcome constraints by assisting them to enhance their capacities to design and implement comprehensive and effective programs.
