The Investment Climate Capacity Enhancement team has expertise across a broad range of investment climate themes. Some examples: Regulatory Barriers to Business Businesses in many countries face a range of bureaucratic hurdles: cumbersome business registration procedures, complex licensing requirements and sluggish customs processes, among others. We have extensive experience in addressing these regulatory and legal barriers, which deter firms from investing and doing business. We have worked on ‘single window’ models for investment approval, as well as ‘single administrative documents’ that facilitate trade flows. We have extensive experience of Regulatory Impact Assessment techniques. Enterprise Capacity & Innovation In many countries, entrepreneurs and investors are keen to do business – but lack the skills and capacity to grow their firms. Our program helps develop the capacity of enterprises to innovate and develop their products and services. MSME Development Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are the bedrock of private sector activity in many countries. They play a crucial role in promoting growth in rural areas and are a vital source of jobs in urban areas. MSMEs are particularly vulnerable to a hostile investment climate, as they lack the resources and contacts that larger firms wield. Our work program helps governments put in place the support structures that MSMEs need in order to become competitive and grow, including access to finance and microfinance, Business Development Services (BDS) and improved linkages along the economic value chain. Post-Conflict Private Sector Development The investment climate in post-conflict settings is particularly challenging. Capacity to plan and implement is lacking, both in government and the private sector. Reduced social capital makes it harder to do business. And a lack of jobs can threaten to upset a fragile peace. Our program helps address these important issues.
