China: GDLN Workshop on Industrial Cluster and SME Development

November 12-13 2007, Baotou

Overview

How to improve the productivity and competitiveness of SME becomes one of the key issues in the process of industrialization and economic development in China. Cluster and value chains are important instruments for industrial development. Because clusters can yield a range of benefits, such as improved opportunities for innovation, greater business formation, and higher productivity, public policy has been increasingly keen on setting up and promoting cluster initiatives.

The proposed workshop by the World Bank Institute and Tsinghua University is intended to provide the audience a basic understanding of clusters and value chains, their advantages, how they work and possible government policy interventions to assist their development. Several cases studies will be presented, and some field visits will be arranged as well.
