The World Bank and the Government of South Africa and Finland hosted the Knowledge for Africa's Development Conference in May 2006 in South Africa. The objective of the conference was to enhance understanding and awareness among key African policymakers and interested stakeholders, on the issues that all African countries need to address access to, and use of, knowledge to strengthen their competitiveness and increase their economic and social well-being. The event brought together African countries to discuss and share their experiences and challenges of building knowledge-based economies.
On March 2008 the World Bank, in partnership with the South African Department of Science and Technology and the Government of Finland, published the Knowledge for Africa's Development: Ten Priorities report. The publication outlines the role of Science, Technology and Innovation as a means to building a knowledge-based economy. The keynote address was delivered by the South African Science and Technology Minister, Dr Mosibudi Mangena.
Summary of Report
Knowledge for Africa's Development: Ten Priorities seeks to take further the conversation that was started at the May 2006 Knowledge for Africa's Development Conference. The aim is that the publication should enable some of the key aspects of the conversation to be made accessible to a wider audience than those present at the conference. It is hoped that the publication will also encourage effective and relevant action in addressing the challenges of building knowledge-based economies in Africa.
