Advanced Strategies for Development: Building Knowledge Economies for Senior Asian Policymakers

The forum on "Advanced Strategies for Development: Building Knowledge Economies for Senior Asian Policymakers" took place on February 22, 2008 and brought together 31 participants from 11 countries from East and South Asia. This one-day special forum was designed to cover the overview of knowledge economy in the form of core concepts, global trends, and policy issues as well as Korea’s experiences with knowledge economy strategies. International diverse experiences offered participants how countries have developed and implemented strategies in their own particular environments and foster insights among participants. Highlights of the forum included:

  • Jean-Eric Aubert's introduction outlining ways and means to build Knowledge Economies, based on the K4D flagship report on Building Knowledge Economies;
  • An in-depth presentation on the Korean knowledge economy made by Dr. Suh (Korea Development Institute)-the main author of the recent KDIS-WBI book on Korea;
  • An excellent overview of the Irish experience by Tom McCarthy (Irish Management Institute), a thoughtful and critical analysis of issues faced in the Arab world by Ms. Hanania (Center for Policy Research and Dialogue based in Jordan);
  • Animated small group discussions focused on innovation, education and IT, facilitated by Phil Karp, Natasha Beschorner, and Jean-Eric Aubert of the World Bank Institute.
