The overall purpose of the PGP is to increase the ability of poor countries to design and implement effective Poverty Reduction Strategies. This is achieved through individual initiatives which are specifically designed:
- To energize social and policy debates on poverty reduction to help shape national and regional poverty agendas
- To enhance awareness in poor countries of the most effective strategies for poverty reduction
- To enhance interaction between national PRSP teams to enable them to benefit from each other's experiences in designing and implementing PRSPs
- To enable practitioners working in the field of poverty reduction to more effectively exchange knowledge on best practices
- To increase technical skills related to poverty assessment and analysis
- To build the capacities of both local and regional institutions involved in poverty reduction
