The course will explore the concepts of gender and gender inequality, the relationship between gender inequality and poverty, and discuss the importance of gender issues in economic development. The course consists of a survey of contemporary literature on gender issues in economic development and poverty reduction.
 Audience

 Course structure

The course will be structured via four week-long modules. Participants will be expected to read the course materials at the beginning of the week. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of each week there will be an online discussion (not in real time) among participants guided by that week’s moderator. The course is also based on the philosophy of peer-to-peer learning. To successfully complete the course and receive a certificate from WBI, each participant is required to read the mandatory materials, to connect weekly and participate in the online discussion each of the four weeks and write a final essay.

Please note: WBI is announcing an essay contest. The winner will be sponsored to travel to Washington D.C. to participate in the course on Gender and Economic Empowerment tentatively organized in June 2009 by the World Bank.
