Balancing Political Participation: Moving Towards Gender Equality

July 16-20, 2007

Islamabad, Pakistan

South Asian governments are beginning to take steps to increase women's political participation through the establishment of quota systems at national and local level. For example, one -third of the seats in local government structures are reserved and held by women. Despite some notable progress, women's participation and representation in government and decision-making falls behind the target adopted and endorsed by the Commonwealth Ministers Responsible for Women's Affairs and Heads of Government.

This workshop focused the issues faced by Parliamentarians in the course of their duties and the key objectives were to:

  • Bring together Parliamentarians to exchange experiences and good practices of women’s participation in processes of democratic decision-making;
  • Increase the understanding of gender and democracy within the Commonwealth framework, explore women’s role in poverty eradication, protection of human rights and the issue of HIV/AIDS
  • Bridge the generational divide to create interest and access for young people to engage in politics and governance,
  • and to contribute to the professional development of all those attending the Workshop.
