Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia September 21-23, 2008 WBI is working with parliamentary organizations and universities around the world to develop a set of generally accepted indicators of parliamentary performance. To date, international organizations and bilateral donor agencies have placed a major emphasis on the development of indicators to measure government performance – but little attention has been placed on identifying indicators and benchmarks with which to measure parliamentary performance. WBI, UNDP, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs last year jointly developed a set of benchmarks for democratic legislatures. WBI has also worked with the Parliamentary Centre to develop a set of indicators with which to assess parliament’s role in the budget process. The Parliamentary Centre, IFES, the Overseas Development Institute, the Christer Michelsen Institute and others have also sought to develop indicators and benchmarks with which to measure different aspects of parliamentary performance. In September 2008, WBI and Griffith University’s Politics and Public Policy Department will organize an international seminar and workshop which will bring together all of the key organizations working to develop parliamentary indicators and benchmarks with the aim of developing a generally accepted framework to measure parliamentary performance.
