Partnerships with Canadian Institutions

The Parliamentary Strengthening Program of the World Bank Institute (WBI) aims to enhance the capacity of parliaments to effectively fulfill their core functions, which include: oversight (holding the executive arm of government to account); representation (giving voice to citizens); and formulation of public policy and enactment of legislation. Over the past 15 years, some 10,000 parliamentarians have participated in WBI’s training activities. Originally, the focus was on “training” individual members of parliament (MPs) in areas such as anti-corruption, poverty reduction and environmental issues. Today, our emphasis lies more on enhancing the capacity of parliament as an institution of governance – and as such WBI works closely with committees and parliamentary secretariats.

Most of WBI’s events are organized and delivered in partnership with outside organizations, including many in Canada. Please see the brochure (153 kb pdf) which provides an overview of some of the collaborative arrangements between WBI’s Parliamentary Strengthening Program and its Canadian partners. These partnerships are particularly valued as they enable WBI to access a broad range of Canadian experience and expertise in the field of parliamentary governance while, at the same time, providing a global platform for Canadian organizations to demonstrate such expertise.
