The impacts of climatic extremes are well known to water resource managers, especially in arid and semi-arid regions or flood prone areas. The increases in frequency and intensity of these extreme events, however, present greater challenges than erratic rainfall and increased mean temperatures.
The current methods for modeling climate change address long-term scenarios, providing outputs for 2050 to 2100, which provides a general idea of the projected climate that the countries may face. These outputs are not generally useful, however, for short-medium term planning often faced by water managers.
This is the second of two sessions, with participation by Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Australia, that take a closer look at some emerging approaches that have been used by countries to better manage the risk of extreme climate events and reduce their negative impact on development gains.
WBI & GDLN teamed up to host the Expo's Virtual Pavilion, where experts in water and all interested peoples came together to learn, discuss and propose solutions to diverse water-related challenges.
