E-Waterexpo: Water and Energy

Water and Energy
September 2, 2008

Hydropower accounts for about 20% of the world’s electricity supply and 88% of the supply from renewable resources. Currently it supplies electricity to some 2 billion people who would lack access otherwise.

It’s role in development and poverty alleviation continues to evolve as hydropower offers a hedge against rising energy prices and can play an important role in energy trade and regional power pools—especially in the 260 international river basins in the world.

While a decade of learning about environmental and social risks has shifted the definition of sustainable hydropower infrastructure, hydropower remains risky. Implementing good practices is challenged by lack of capacity and inherent complexities exacerbated by the multi-sector, multi-objective nature of hydropower projects.

This session explores key themes in moving to sustainable hydropower: strategic planning to ensure projects are appropriate and consider both water management and energy issues; sharing of benefits across a wide range of stakeholders; and managing for uncertainty through adaptive management and contingency planning.
